Report from the 2005 PDW Chair
Dean F. Eitel
DePaul University
The conference theme of “a new vision of management” was certainly experienced at the Professional Development Workshop sessions in Honolulu. More than 60 presenters and attendees came together to focus on strengthening their public and nonprofit management tools during these sessions. Here is a capsule of the workshop sessions.
1. The session on Service-Learning Effect in undergraduate nonprofit management was extremely interactive with numerous best practices discussed in detail. The session was organized by Regan Schaffer, Pepperdine University.
2. The session on the use of management cases in teaching and research helped the many participants in developing ways to research, write, and use cases. William Crittenden, Northeaster University, organized the session.
3. The governance and strategic tools of multi-hospital networks session focused on measuring results based on the type of structure and the organization culture of the network. It was organized by Emanuele Vendramini, Bocconi University – Italy.
4. A well-attended hands-on workshop showed participants how to improve their work-life balance by developing their own personal strategic planning process. It provided the tools to identify those personal strategic components needed to resolve this balance. Dean F. Eitel, DePaul University, organized the session.
5. The successful junior faculty and doctoral consortia provided an outstanding forum for the sixteen participants to strengthen their approach to academic success. Organizers Angela Bies (Texas A&M University), Judith Milleson (Ohio University), and Eric Martin (Eastern Connecticut State University) and Kira Reed did a great job in running the sessions. All consortia participants enjoyed the dinner cruise along Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head as a way of getting to know other PNP members. (There are some very interesting photos also!!).
My personal thanks to all those who presented and help coordinate the PNP Professional Development Workshops this August.
